It's tomato season at the farmer's market! I love this time of year when we reap the benefits of summer's harvest. There is nothing like a homegrown tomato - the taste, the texture, the nostalgia. I have a little bit of farmer in me. My Dad and I would keep a garden every summer. In addition to tomatoes, we grew cucumbers, peppers, green beans, strawberries and more. So when I bite into a fresh tomato, it provides more than just taste, but a deliciousness of the heart.
I can't grow my own tomatoes these days, although I did try one year and had quite a nice cherry tomato plant going on my Manhattan fire escape; if I may say so myself. Alas, FDNY showed up and reminded me that it is a "fire escape" not a veranda. Fair enough...but I digress.
Allora, luckily I have the farmer's market nearby in Union Square, and I ventured over there last weekend. I had a hard time choosing with all of summer's fruits and veggies bursting with color and the promise of salads, sandwiches, sautes, smoothies, gravies and sauces. Sharing some of my 'harvest' with you with a reminder to eat local whenever possible.
